And with both majors you rebid 2NT (invite) or 3♣ (GF). You also get Smolen for free: 1NT - 2♣ -- 2♦ (no 5cM) - 3♣ -- 3♦ (no 4cM) - 3M (GF 4M5oM)

Which means you can't play a 4-4 heart fit at the 2 level which you need opposite a weak NT

I have never analysed the method below 14-16 and would not be surprised if it was problematic in many ways such as this.
Also the fact that it conceals the opener's hand and makes him declare almost always will presumably have less value with weak NT.

Yup, weak takeouts are much more common and you don't want to have to go beyond 2M, also yes things like Smolen that make the opener declarer are not worth playing
