You are south, dummy is East, partner leads J declarer winning A. Declarer plays 2, partner 10 (std carding)

a) what do you do if dummy ducks 10?
b) what do you do if dummy covers with Q?

Overtaking and shooting the spade back seems like automatic thing to do.
With some luck we will lock declarer in hand and take 3 heart tricks if he is 5-Jxx-xx-AKx or something.
I fail to come up with any layout when it matters assuming all players played rationally though.

I overtook and played a trump, and losed a trick due to that, I think that if you think just a bit deeper you will find the right defence.

I really fail to see significant layout unless declarer played us for AK second failing to put up the queen of diamonds.
Could you please post the full hand ? I am curios.

The answer was to kill dummy's entry before diamonds were high. Just ducking 10 would work if declarer doesn't put the queen.

I won the diamond and played a spade, then declarer played more diamonds and it was late for clubs now, another diamond set a trick in dummy, and a heart was pitched on 4th diamond after ruffing a club in dummy.

Nothing you can do if he covers the diamond. He tried to give your partner an entry for a heart through but you overtook :P

I think you don't need to figure out the hand exactly to realize not to overtake, you have an entry in both red suits as well as a tenace in both red suit. There is no rush to play a trump, there could be a rush to get a heart through/not set up the diamonds

You can play clubs untill you make dummy ruff, that way 3 diamonds, 2hearts and 2 spades cash. Remember partner led J
