I dont believe in defending against a partial with 4m.
Add the 5332 shape and the colors, do I expect that I be at best -1 or that I will be at least -2?
If I had wanted to act, it should have been a round earlier, but I passed ( I agree ).

Declarer throws a losing diamond on a top club and they make it thanks to the very favourable heart layout. Only one table to compare with again which was 4♣(S)-1.

In the given seq. East holding AKx in club facing a partner who opened, may find a double ( or not ), -200 beats -140.

There is a spade loser, a heart loser and two club losers. Assuming the defence cash a spade at trick one, South needs to dispose of two small hearts in their hand. One heart can be thrown on the third diamond thanks to the 3-3 break but I don't see how South can get another heart away on one of dummy's established small diamonds without East being able to ruff low. South only has one entry to dummy so if they play ♦KAQ throwing a heart, on a fourth round of diamonds East ruffs low and South if they overruff eventually has to give West a heart trick.

Can't declarer simply draw trumps before cashing the diamonds?
Actually, I see - if the opponents attack diamonds instantly, that doesn't quite work. But if they do that, then leading a 4th diamond from dummy after one trump works anyway, since if East trumps, you have a trump entry to the last diamond. But that may be a double dummy line vs taking the heart finesse.

I think I would pass. Why compete over 3 spades in that situation
Now to see how the hand turned out
4 clubs -1 versus 3 spades meh. My brain works in very simple units. You have part score/minus a little; game; and slam
And a few simple additional rules - try not to force or double opponent into the bigger scores
But the considerations I am reading above in this case are far beyond the computational capacity available to me at a Bridge table
I should say also I would quite possibly also have led a club but who knows
How do the stats stack up. Where is David?
But if its too complex for me to try to write up in a script you have to be happy at your call at the table

Double dummy says nine tricks are the limit.

well they don't have to switch to a diamond, second spade or 3 rounds of clubs which could be right, and you're sorted trivially

Even when vul partner rates to only have about 6 tricks and I will hardly ever provide more than 2.
Whereas my hand looks just as good in defence.
