A sim pairs event, three and a half tables. Your bid?

I would like a bit more if in second seat. Looks fine as a fourth seat bid.

I bid 3, felt 2 didn't do the hand justice. The auction proceeds:

Now what?

We have a defensive hand and partner didn't bid 4 to show a good raise last round. I think double is fine, we likely won't make 5 unless partner has very good support.

That makes me feel better. I doubled and this was the full deal:

As expected -650 was a bottom. The other two scores were 5= and 5-2. I thought they were sacrificing against our game, in reality it was the other way around.

FAIL

This and many other hands contributed to our grand final score of 30%, a record low for me.

I'd expect partner to pull to 5 with that hand. Our defensive values are limited by a failure to double 2, and partner knows we are hoping to take a spade trick (or perhaps even two) and we will not.

I was going to say 2 spades (without any thought) or 2NT (scrub that - wrong side)). Now reading the thread

I agree with your bidding. Partner really needs to bid 5 as David says.

I always like to test top-rated (AFAIK) Bridge software with some hands
Qplus 2/1 ended in 5 spades

EDIT apologies. West didn't pass in Qplus

If N bids 4, S will definitely bid 5.

My feeling when I first saw the post was that I was going to double 5 but I'm paying off if W is walking the dog rather than just being a bad player and taking the last guess.

West is one of my other monthly partners who I have never seen walk the dog before, so I assumed she was making a punt.

It has been said that if you never double a making contract, you aren't doubling often enough.

Why wouldn't North double 5?

I think S bids 5 even if he does.

2 is not unreasonable IMHO, as said I would bid 3 or maybe double but I think it's close.

In a weak field, the folks holding your cards are passing 4, in which case doubling 5 is a nullo play - you already had a top if it goes down whether you double or not, but if it makes, doubling takes you from average to bottom.
