The first 4 tricks looks pretty normal, but at trick 5 the bot in North did not cover 8.

Looking isolated at the suit, that could be right if declarer had KQ65 and was planning to duck, then declarer could finesse against J7, but that would require entries in dummy that is not there, but the worse mistake is that playing 7 also would open that possibility. So what ever simulation it found the 7 could never be right, but the 9 might be as in the actual layout.

Old version of GIB simulated 100 hands, found 9 to be better on 5 occasions, and the other 95, 9, 7, 2 were all equal best.

It then gave 7 a small boost as that's the card you should play if you want to signal you have an even number.

That boost (seemingly 0.07 IMPs) outweighed the simulation. Ha.

So to show an even number it is always the second lowest?

It is often right to play the 9 from J9xx

It gives a 0.07 IMP boost to 4 from 8642 too, so appears to be that way (but 5 from 8542, so it plays higher of equals I think). Though GIB is horribly inconsistent these days, so who knows.

And of course, all of this is nonsensical anyway.

Is GIB also giving count in trump?

Playing the 8 from 83 cost a trick here, but the West bot did not play a , so it would probably have been 11 tricks anyway

Nah, that's just GIB playing randomly because South has denied 4 hearts, so it doesn't matter.
