I regularly play with friends, and we are not super-quick in responding during game play. If we delay too long, we are replaced by a robot. Is there a way to extend the response time? Thank you.

Choose the 'Permission required to play' setting.

Thank you. I've looked on the site ~ please tell me where I can locate this request. It does not appear in my Account under Settings.

It's in the table settings, not your account settings. The table host determines this at the start of the game (I believe this can be changed on the fly by the current table host).

When you "start a table" in the Casual room, you can set "permission required to kibitz" and "permission required to play" (by default, both are off). Permission required to play means that the table host has to approve each person wanting to sit down - but with a set game, you'll be reserving the seats anyway, so that won't matter (there's no approval of people who have reserved seats).

But as a side note, "Permission required to play" turns off the "players who look like they've lost connection get booted in favour of robot/new player" check.
