NS playing 2/1

Team match of 16 boards converted to VP.

Lead: 8

W is Helgemo and East is Helness if that matters.

They play 3rd and 5th and since west would probably lead D from AK ill play east for a D card and without 5S.
So imo the S are QT8x---Jxx unless they play MUD or lead 8 from 87x
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

Tired from Santa Clara but off the cuff I'd cover the spade and table the hJ.

Looks like our work would be easier in 4H btw.

I dont think covering matter (i would have played low from dummy) but I do think east will will duck the J!H more often than east got a stiff Q so playing the J is an improvement over A and J.

I dont see anything else

Assume J holds the trick. Now what?

Are you sure you want to lose a club?

Will you send it if LHO plays low? I assume so, then one of 3 things will happen;

1-LHO covers J

2-Your club J holds the trick

3-RHO wins and plays 2nd . (there you go, you wanted to lose a club and you did)

That is one hell of a sick 3 NT, isn't it? Posted Image

I watched my team mate Arthur Wasik declaring this hand and it took nearly 8 minutes, it was terrible for my nerves.

I think just unblocking the A of H and J of clubs to the K look best.

J facing Kx shouldnt induce a cover even from Q9 but you never know.

If H are 42 its more likely that its west that got 4 so i like my odd for the finesse against east.

BTW i assume east played low at T1.

If he play high we might have 3S stopper and its a whole different ball game.

This is the kind of hand that can just paralyze me. As Rodwell says you have to clear the fog somehow.

Would like to think I will draw a position at the table about one of the round queens to make.

Yea, on that hand almost all declarers took their sweet @$ time man.

Actually you made the play that led most declarers to 9 tricks. But that is because WEST had Q9 doubleton clubs and they all covered J.
I was trying to find out, what all declarers who played J and won and then played J and won would do.

At some tables the lead was Q which added some more options into thinking process as Benlessard mentioned. Leader had QJ87 of spades.

West held

QJ87
Qxxx
Hxx
Q9

Did that many west cover the J ?

It look like a major fishing expedition to me.

I would always lead the Q/J from QJ87 unless i suspect/know that one opps got 4. However on this hand leading low is a lot better.
