It was about ***** time!
"Genius has its own limitations, however stupidity has no such boundaries!"
"It's only when a mosquito lands on your testicles that you realize there is always a way to solve problems without using violence!"

"Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say."

I am confused. What are the charges, if any? I would think that a private organization can award contracts for whatever reason they want, including bribes. Or is FIFA actually some sort of public entity?

FIFA may be allowed to accept bribes but FIFA officials are commiting a crime (with FIFA and its member organizations being the "victim") if they accept bribes for making decisions that are against the organization's interests.

Aha, in another article I read that the officials were arrested in Switzerland for extradition to the United States! Apparently most of the charges relate to CONCACAF happenings. I wonder if a soccer investigation in USA will be taken seriously in Europe and elsewhere.

This occurred to me as well. No analogy is perfect, but I was imaging baseball owners being arrested in Switzerland and extradited to France on corruption charges. There would be something of a Say What? reaction here.

Of course soccer has taken root here. Growing up, I barely knew what it was. But I still think of it as European. Or Brazilian.

This has nothing to do with whether I think of it favorably, I do. But I never played it and I don't follow the successes or the controversies.

OK, it seems that the bribes were paid in dollars and were mainly for TV rights which disadvantaged US companies (although Nike seem to have a problem too) which is why the Americans are involved. It's not just CONCACAF, the South American equivalent are also involved, plus the bidding for the south African WC and the Russian/Qatari ones that are still to come.

The Swiss authorities are also investigating some of this.

Switzerland at least seems eager to cooperate with the USA on this matter. Perhaps anti-FIFA sentiment is strong enough in Europe, that they are happy to see anyone go after them.

Heh. When Milosevic arrived in the Netherlands for his trial at the ICC, someone welcomed him in the Airport with a "send him to Texas" sign.

The US arguably could've won the right to organize in 2022 if Qatar hadn't bought it. So they're not fully uninvolved.

The US could arguably organize the May 28, 2015 world cup if necessary. It's not too late for FIFA to get it right.

I can't wait to see John Oliver's reaction this weekend. He devoted most of an entire show to reporting on FIFA's corruption.
