I don’t think that you should dismiss the tactic with such scorn.
I believe that you are applying "real world" background conditions to a different environment in which different theoretical market forces are at play.
One of those factors, for example, is that three players at the table will place 100% trust that you will have no singleton or void, and of those three, twice as many are opponents as are on your side.
The measure of the senselessness of the tactic is its actual success rate. The prevalence of the practice is a reflection of a high perceived success rate. Perhaps not an entirely accurate perception, but I think a different success rate than that to which you would be accustomed in a human field.

GIB defensive carding woefully inadequate. relies on simulations. why not get help from partner? I think 4♥ shows count, attitude more useful and give ten so p knows is high card
that said switching after Q♥ holds is very bizarre surely you place partner with K♥ even without a signal

" When it's following to partner's opening lead, it will give an attitude signal:
•High spot card with an Ace or King
•High spot card with a Queen behind dummy's Ace or King
•Low in any other situation
When it's trying to win the trick in third hand, it will play the lowest of equals. Otherwise, when following suit it gives standard count signals (high = even); an exception is when it's forced to play equivalent cards in a doubleton, it will randomize them because of "restricted choice". "
so at lead against suit it tries to give attitude, but from the notes if lead leads from AK GIB doesn't encourage with Q
anyway these notes have not been updated in a while but GIB has been updated multiple times so who knows if they still hold true.
maybe gives count in NT if it cant win the trick!?
