Another magazine hand that I found interesting:-

West leads Q, East gives the 2

This hand comes from a card-counting article. The solution is to win K, draw trumps in 3 rounds (East discards 3 hearts) and then play 3 rounds of clubs. If East follows 3 times then play them for 0733 shape and drop West's Q, if only twice then 0742 and finesse in diamonds twice since West led from a singleton.

What is not mentioned in the article is the possibility that West led from QJ7, where a simple surrounding play will work. We have to make this decision at trick 1 since we cannot pick up J972 with East if the first trick is won with the A.

How would you play the hand? and is it clear which line is best?

I don't agree with this. QJ7 is a horrible holding to lead from on this auction, I'd have thought a heart was much safer.

True, but singleton queen isn't very attractive either - is he playing his partner for A?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Here is a "resulting senario".

Stiff Q would be a horrible lead.

If West had the Q-J doubleton (or the stiff J), leading the J would be better ( IMO
edit: since there is a much lower probability of partner holding the Ace because of his preemptive opening ) .

Thus, since the Q was actually led, I would deduce it was from Q J x .
