EDIT:
However, I agree this auction can sometimes be tricky, especially if you have an OK hand and length in one of the opponents' suits. For example, a hand I played from earlier today where I sat west:
What is your call? What are the meanings of 2♣, 2♦ and double in your partnership?

2♠ is a possibility so long as you have an understanding this doesn't promise the world's fair.
I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog
Bidding is an estimation of probabilities SJ Simon

Partner probably has something that means we're taking 500 out of anything they bid at this vul, but I'm not doubling 1♦.

I would bid 1NT on this hand.
2♣ = cue bid, usually both majors, doesn't promise a rebid
2♦ = natural, 5+ diamonds
Double = 4 diamonds, penalties (or 5 diamonds too strong to bid 2D)
