Seems like less threads are posted and some regulars appear to be less active these days.

We need about another 1/2 dozen good players to sign up.

It is a great post. I wonder whether the effect Justin has noticed about professionals has also infected, tho perhaps for different reasons, the good amateur players in NA.
Even for amateurs, there is concern over finding good teammates....no, we won't be fired, but maybe we won't be asked to play in the next major event.
And as amateurs, we study the habits of the pros....after all, they live and breathe bridge while for us it is only a hobby....if they shy away from high variance action, isn't that because high variance action is losing bridge?
Justin makes a strong case that it isn't (at least, not if done well).
So maybe it isn't....maybe it's winning bridge against one's peers or against players stronger than we are.
Now if only I could convince my teammates

It is a great post and I think there's a lot of truth in it. The fundamental difference between being on an amateur team and being on the pro team is that (in general) your teammates are a similar standard to you. Surely part of the 'will I get fired' worry is that the sponsor won't understand why you have taken a particular action. There is an English sponsor who has told their team very clearly they are not to defend doubled partscores, basically ever. They still do it sometimes, and when one makes there's a huge row about it - and (I think) this is one reason why a great player was eventually fired from the team, because they wouldn't take that sort of instruction.

Heh, there is a high correlation in me posting on the forums and posting on my blog though, as pretty much I am either thinking about bridge/want to talk about it, or I don't.
