i suspect he is looking for a spade control for slam. I have one...but, I have 3 partner must have at least two, and at this vul the 3 bidder has seven (I think). So I can see A and ruff. So, despite having the spade control, I will pass.

Agree with Ben, we have a nice hand but the holding is unattractive.

Yup, and even if 3 bidder has only 6, lead will go to AQ

We know partner has two small s and seven or eight solid s. But what about his minor suits cards ? He should have controls in both suits, probably a stiff and something like KQX ? That's the kind of hand that makes 5 reasonably safe if partner has a non-descript opener with no control.

Since our space is cramped I think 5 is just a general invite. But if partner does need only a spade control for slam then why not 6NT?

Tough hand. Probably pass is right with my Spades and zero Hearts.

I agree. Partner's only other way to bid 5 is double followed by 5, but he may not want to do that because of the risk that I'll pass it.

If partner has only one way to bid 5, it's just a general try, and this is an obvious pass because of the spade wastage, heart void and low point-count.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
