I can't really understand what is declarer doing.

perhaps he has Ax KQ109xx Kxx Ax, then a 4th diamond is fatal, so lets play a club.

That gives partner a 1 overcall.

Maybe Axx KQ109x Kxx Ax, if that's not a 1NT opener? Anyway, if a fourth diamond were right we wouldn't be in this position - declarer would just ruff any spade loser and draw trumps.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

A diamond was also chosen at the table like 80% of the poll right now. It was not a success. ATB is it partners fault for not cashing a club before returning diamonds? Is it just bad luck that opponents bidding gave us a bad picture of the hand?

Here's the full hand:

Both partner and declarer are from other planets.

Why would partner cash the A of clubs? Does he know we have QJT9 of diamonds somehow? Cashing the CA is pointless except to stop us from giving a ruff sluff for no reason.

I tend not to participate in defence topics since I'm hopeless :). A couple of things though:

1. Why didn't we play the Q the first time we played the suit? That way, it should be easier for partner to get it right.
2. Declarer misplayed it too.

I would have played the last diamond too hoping for a trump promotion.

He obviously should have found the only killing lead : small .
