Scoring: MP

3-(P)-?

Partner preempts your void as usual. Do you dig a little further, or pass and hope LHO balances?
Partner's style: He'll always have a 7 card heart suit, QJTxxxx or better. Always 6-10 points (not necessarily in hearts!). Never 4 spades. Possibly a 4 card minor.
New suit by you is forcing for one round.

Also, if it affects your decision, partner is (shall we say) not the best declarer in the world...

it beats trying to figure out what you would do if your RHO opened 3 :)

Agree with the hope of a unanimous poll.

I also wouldn't find too much difficulty if RHO opens 3. I would bid 4 in anticipation that I might need to bid 4 next round. Won't always work out, but I've at least bid my longest and strongest suit.

I would improve the contract to 4 after the auction continues P - X - P - P - ???. But no double, no trouble.

How come 6 wasn't an option? Partner must have AQx, QJ10xxxx, xx, x, so the bid is obvious IMO.

Anything but pass is silly and if your suit requirements are what you say I would pass if they try to penalize us too, our AK of clubs might be useful and partner's AK of hearts will not be.
I once yelled at my partner for discarding the 'wrong' card when he was subjected to a squeeze that I allowed by giving the wrong count with too high a card. Now he's allowed to pitch aces when the opponents have the king in the dummy. At trick 2. When he could have followed suit. And blame me.

The only way I can improve the contract is by bidding 2.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Wow 2nd unanimous poll I've ever seen over here. Congratulations!

EDIT: it's no longer unanimous so you'll have to try again ;)

OK, OK, I did expect the poll to be pretty one-sided.
As it happens, bidding clubs would've worked out because the hands were:
Scoring: MP

If they don't lead or switch to trumps (which are 1-1), 6C makes (I think the spade Ace falls in 4 rounds, I think hearts are 4-2 or 5-1, but I can't remember for sure).
Anyway, the opps will bid lots of diamonds whether you pass or bid clubs, so you won't get to play 6C or 3H.

Calculated just for fun:

Partner is a massive 33 times more likely to be 7-4 in hearts + diamonds than 7-4 in hearts + clubs. (Assuming any 4 diamonds, which doesn't hold of course since some diamond holdings would be too strong for 3, so it's just a very crude estimate).

The one who opened with 7-4, we should know better by now to just bid 6 of your second longest suit...
