If your P opens 1S and you have 16 counts with three spade cards including K or J, how do you respond? Partner may have 19 counts and we may have a slam.

a new suit on the 2 level.

suppose you have

Kxx AQxxx Axx Kxx

then you bid 2♥, game forcing with 5+ hearts.

Later you will be able to bid spades, showing that you have 5+ hearts and 3 spades. :)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I see so many people go bananas with a balanced or semi-balanced 16 count and 3-card support for the major.

If you play strong opening NT, especially if they can contain a five-card major, maybe there are a few hands which will have play for slam but opener will make a slammish bid after a game forcing response in nearly all of those cases.

I just pretend it is a normal balanced GF with 3-card support, unless partner makes a move.
