Scoring: IMP

South passed as dealer.....contentious?

North opened 1S 3rd in (strong NT, 4cM)

east doubled

South bid 2C - not playing xfers here

west bid 2D

back to south who bid 3C

round to east who bid 3D

and that was it. -2 for +100 was poor compensation for a good and making vul 3NT. 5C also makes rather fortunately.....further question, if after however you bid it, west doubles 3NT would you run?

I don't know whether west would have doubled at our table, but we scored up with -1150.

I'd open the South hand, but wouldn't insist on game with the North hand
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

before commenting on this hand how would the bidding proceed if S held say
x Qxxx x KJTxxxx

My guess is the bidding would proceed exactly as the auction shown and therein
lies the problem. The S hand is a very reasonable pass fearing a preemptive bid
would bury a heart fit but S did not do enough to try and differentiate between the actual hand held and the much weaker example hand i provided.

Assuming everyone is happy with a 2c bid (which I am not) the very least S could do is bid 2h vs 3c. This bid would at least show a much better club suit and at the same time give N a clue as to why S didnt open with say 3c right away (fear of missing a heart fit) this bidding might show a hand similar to x Qxxx x KQJxxxx.

S has to appreciate the opening bid by p along with the X by rho means the club K
is an overwhelming favorite to not be in lho hand. Once we realize this our hand is
now worth 7 tricks not too shabby for a passed hand. This leads me to wonder why
not

xx vs 2c?

This bid still leaves open the possibility of a heart fit (whereas the non forcing 2c bid once again threatens to bury a heart fit) and lets p know you are near top of your power range for a passed hand. We are prepared for anything N does (surely we dont fear 1s xx) and now we have a fighting chance to get to game. If the bidding continues as before after 2d p p (surely p would bid hearts if they had hearts and a weakish hand) I would bid 3d which should clarify just how good my
(obviously clubs) hand is and trust p judgement from there.

AQJxxxx with a highly probable K to the right look like a very possible 7 tricks to me if partner got a doubleton clubs, so even if 2C seems normal i think its a mistake compared to XX followed by 3C. I dont remeber last time ive had a bad score because they played 1Nt xx making. So here im not afraid to XX without full values because i think the % that the bidding return at 3D is acceptable.

I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I would open the hand 3C and I would pass with the North hand.
