1-(4)-x-p

suppose you are not strong enough to make a slam try. your only two options are pass and 4. when would you pass with 5 spades and 4 hearts?
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Never. Maybe with AKJ or AKQ of diamonds.

I don't understand passing with Kx of diamonds. Yay, we have the diamond king doubleton onside for them, I guess we should pass a takeout double! Seems like it could easily lead to them making 4D X with us cold for 4H.

I don't think passing with QJx is good either...maybe if the hand is exactly like A5432 A432 QJ2 2.

I guess the vulnerability and form of scoring makes some difference. 99 % of the time you should bid 4H if you have 4 of them imo.

To pass with this shape I think you need both bad majors and good defence. Kx in a minimum might mean that you have bad majors, but it won't be much use in defence.

The only 5422 I might pass is something like Axxxx xxxx KQ Ax, where I can be pretty sure of beating 4 and also wouldn't have great confidence about making 4.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Probably no more often than with 5422. If you were to change my example to Axxxx xxxx KQx A, I'd pass, but I think that's close to a 4 bid.

FYP! There is nothing wrong with this, it's normal!
