I have been playing bridge on the Windows BBO and I like the format but am trying to rid myself
of the Windows menace. I have been on the Linux BBO reading what I can and finding the format
quite different. This makes me hesitant to play with live persons while learning the nitty-gritty
of the Linux forum.
Is there a tutorial for the Linux forum that I can read.

Try the web version at www.bridgebase.com

The windows version will run under Wine. Email Gerardo@ if you get stuck, or search these forums for the word linux. Go back all the way. Basically, IIRC, you have to install the symbol font. The rest is probably optional.

Actually a separate forum is needed for those trying to use the Linux BBO without using
Wine. Am I the only one trying to use the linux BBO???

There are a lot of people using Linux, here, I am one of them.

You need to install flashplayer.

It is recomendable to use the web version as uday says. It has almost full functionality now and is much better IMHO.

There is no different between running bbo on linux and on windows, as it is a web application.

I am sorry but your comments are confusing to me.

Here is what I am doing in PCLinuxOS.
I sign on to FireFox and type in "www.bridgebaseonline.com".
This brings up a totally different window than what I have been using in the Windows BBO.
I guess I am using Flash Player as I do get a BBO window. PCLinuxOS must be loaded with
Flash Player but I didn't install it.
Is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

Also to get in this forum I can use the same ID that I use in the Windows BBO.
However I had to create another PW for this forum.

I also tried "Playonlinux". That keeps on telling me there is an update to V 3.6 but I can't
find it. It certainly is not in the repositories.
So How do I download it??????

I think this is the easiest way to run BBO under Linux - yes the Window looks very different, but once you get used to it, it is actually much nicer.
Yes you will need to have a flash player installed to use this, I don't know whether LinuxOS comes with one preinstalled.

I will try to use the one you suggested.

The one thing that I think is missing is the Movie.
Been able to adjust most other things for these old tired eyes.
Also having trouble greeting my Partner.
Keeps on giving Permission Denied

How about the idea of running Virtual box in PCLinuxOS and bypassing Wine?

IMHO VMWare works better than Wine for this purpose.

But again, you really should use the flash version, the one you get when clicking "play bridge" as bridgebase.com. Once you get used to it it is great!

The movie is there. Greating your partner should not be a problem, but make sure you send the chat to the table, not to partner privately. There is a "--> Table" button towards the lower left corner when you are at a table, click that one before you chat.

I am under the impression that downloading a program in any Linux distro is a nono.
Your supposed to go to use synaptic and load what you find there.
I'm pretty sure "Flash Player" is not my problem. The Linux distro "PCLinuxOS" is using version
10.0.32.18-1pclos2009.
There is no reference to "Flash Player when clicking on "Play Bridge" in the Linux version.
I've tried "Playonlinux" but can't seem to get the latest version or figure out how to use it.

Last time I played bridge using the Linux version I had to quit as I was causing to much
trouble for the other players.

I think you should not use vmware it defeat the purpose of giving up on windows which by the way is a mistake.

I have downloaded the latest program "Playonlinux" from the repository. NOW WHAT do I do????

I don't think "playonlinux" was intended to be used for an online program like Bridge Base Online.
Tell me if I am wrong.

Actually there're some features missing in Flash version of BBO, for example, the archive of DOTW, etc.

Could you be more specific about the kind of problems?

I have been using the flash version since its beginning, mainly under ubuntu/firefox but sometimes under redhat/firefox, windows/firefox, windows/chrome, windows/IE or apple/safari. I haven't noticed any differences between the platforms.

I sometimes use netbridgevu under Wine, it doesn't always work smoothly as you need to keep wine and netbridgevu up-to-date, and there are the issues with fonts and with browser configuration. netbridgevu under wmvare always worked smoothly.

playonlinux seems to be some kind of windows emulator, similar to Wine. It might work with BBO but I wouldn't expect it to. Just use the flash version.

Long time linux player myself, and I agree. I love having BBO available on both OS's, as which one I'm one when I decide I feel like playing a few hands is a crapshoot, and rebooting just to play bridge sucks.

I have used wine on Ubuntu 8 and 9 for the last 2 years without any incident for the last 2 years. Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4, with I think Wine 1.5

Now I have random crashes in NetvueBridge.exe, about once in 20 minutes.

Anyone else having the same problem?

I used NetBridgeVu with wine for years while I was a student. Just installed again on Ubuntu 11.04. After disabling
gecko everything seems to work except the GIB. For some reason I'm unable to get the gib analyses to work. I used to
love watching the jec team matches and vugraph casts, but I'm bad so I need gib to see where they can go wrong

It seems to be a bit hard to debug (I don't see anything obvious in the terminal output), but then again I only use
wine for BBO so I'm not experienced with it.

wine: 1.3.34

Any suggestions or directions are very much appreciated.

Next step:
Upgrade to 11.10 (or switch distro to avoid all this default rubbish like unity) and build wine from source. I'll
give that a shot over christmas when I have some time.

If you use the web version it has a GIB button when kibitzing, but not in Vugraph.
