Sitting south White/Red you hold:

Scoring: IMP

Dealer (east) passes:

(Pass) - 1 - (1) - Pass
(Pass) - ?

Any action here?
Any other choices close?

And, much as it may look like it, this is not a preliminary question to a BIT ruling!

they are red v white.. 2 aims at what? +130? Anyone who thinks partner is raising or that we are getting to game after this call is smoking wacky tobaccy.

If we are looking for game, we either double then bid, to show extras, or we reopen 1N to show 18-19 ostensibly balanced, but having shown our major.

Alternatively we play for multiples of 100 by passing. Partner rates to have no more than 2 hearts... or a horrible hand... and on the obvious heart lead, we will be well positioned to know which is best...hearts showing a diamond entry or club switch, since we have trump control. On a good day we get +300..imagine the diamond K in dummy and partner with say 10xx in trump and the club A.

Sometimes pass is the bravest call, since it seems to go against our instincts when we hold half the deck.

Indeed, while I don't expect much support in this forum, pass is my call here, by a razor-thin margin over double.

I'd rank the calls as pass=100, double 90, 1N 70 and 2 40

I wouldn't pass at any other vulnerability.

Hi Mike Im not looking for game, my partner would have shown some sign of life with A or anything more. I don’t expect the auction to end at 2.
How potent is the wacky baccy on the island?

I don't think 1NT is totally awful, but 2 seems very normal and I can't see a reason not to. Mike, pass I at least understand, double I don't.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I agree with mikeh on this one. After the NV pass, if partner has some HCP, then:

1. Partner will have 0-2 cards
2. Will not have 4-4 or 4-5 in minors (can dbl 1)
Therefore, the most likely situation is a longish minor (?)

We may have a cross-ruff. But doubling with my hand does not help, because partner will pull to 2 or 2. Passing and setting up a nice x-ruff seems inviting. We may score +300 or even +400

I choose pass

If it were MPs I would pass and expect to have a reasonable shot at +200 or hope that our +100 is beating +90's in 2.

IMPs, I'm not concerned about trying for some magic number, but I am worried about missing a possible 3N or even 5 and chucking away 5-8 IMPs with a pass.

So I'll bid 2

I much prefer 1NT to 2D, despite the stiff. 1NT at least shows my values, all 2D says is that I have d & H and am happy to compete. I may well have a chance to bid 2D later.

Am I any worse off than if I had bid 2D rather than 1NT? I don't think so, and partner won't think I have 5 in the diamond suit if I remove 2C now. The Hog already implied this before your post, I think.

PASS.
To reopen I need either shape (short , 5-5, 6..) or extra values.

#1 2D
#2 1NT looks reasonable, but I prefer to 2D
1NT showes the strength and the stopper, lies about the shape,
2D could be based on (substantial) weaker hand, but showes 5-4
