Can you give me a maximum of ten rules, standards or laws, that you think a society should have for the basis of a social structure of a group of people to use as a guide to live by

AFAIAC, you need only one: "An' it harm none, do what thou wilt." Although one might add that one should not give creedence to those who claim harm where none exists.

I can, but as I am quite antisocial, I'm not going to tell you.

The easiest one rule set is:

Do until others like they should do to you.

But ten rules I would dream of:

1. Support your community freely. Help it to survive.
2. Belive that others are fair and nice as long as you cannot prove the opposite.
3. Give all people in your community the same chances, espacially all children.
4. It does not matter whether your neighboor has a bigger/smaller car, a nicer/worse job or more/less money. It does matter how he behave.
5. You are free to belive everything you want to believe. And so is anybody else. Don't try to convince him that your way is the only one.
6. Be fair to others, don't try to maximisze your personal profit but maximisze the win for all.
7. Stand up for your rights and for the rights of people who need your support.
8. If necessary fight till your death for the right thing.
9. In cases of disagreement about right and wrong, there should be a circle of 30 members of the community who have to judge about the case. These members are voted for only one case and totally random from all members of the community.
10. Laugh every day.

Okay, I am dreaming, this does not work for mankind, so I must stick to the rules we have.
I would like the Ten Commitments then. You may disagree about the part with "There is just one god ...etc". But to have a day a week where noone works, to forbid murder, burglary etc. sounds okay for me.
Kind Regards

Roland

Maximize the benefit created by your (in)actions.

Apply this criterion to the first 10 things that you do.

Probably the first rule is "Thou shalt not try to reduce the complexity of life to ten rules". However, high on my list would be something like "Nurture idealism, honor realism". For example, all men are created equal but some are real jerks.

1. be excellent to each other

And

2. party on, dudes
