Should I have bid or passed?

My hand:
♠ K J 10 9 7 4 2
♥ 7
♦ -
♣ A K J 8 4

I was sitting in South.
West dealer
The bidding went:

1♥ p 3♥ 4♥

Hoping my partner would bid 4♠. His hand:

♠ 8 3
♥ J 10
♦ Q 7 5 4 3 2
♣ 9 5 2

He didn't like my bid.
What do you think?

Hi,

I dont like your bid either, unless 4H is Michaels,
in which case I would have expected, that you said
this.
If 4H is not Michaels, the bid is simply ..., you make
an unclear cue bid, get an unspecified response and
start guessing.

Either bid 4S direct, or make a t/o bid followed by 4S,
both should be ok, at least you will be able to control
the auction.

My intention was to bid Michaels, but I was unsure if it was usable after the sequence 1♥-pass-3♥, since up to that moment we had been using Michaels only after RH player's opening at level 1.

Hi,

Using 4H as Michaels is certainly a sensible
agreement to have, but it is not common
sense.

Even with Michaels agreed you should bid 4♠.
You have seven spades and five clubs so why let p choose, he cannot know this.
With five spades and seven clubs Michaels would be ok.

7♠ and nothing wrong with the suit, so I'd just bid them and not worry about ♣ and cue bids that may muddy the water for PD.

4♠ is normal.

If you had longer clubs that spades, then the Michaels cue has more appeal.
