The silliest thing is you have no idea to see which of your posts have been upvoted. If you post a lot, you can just see your rep go up but might have no idea which posts people liked/upvoted, so it doesn't help much for positive reinforcement. Even if it remains anonymous, you should be able to see which of your posts get upvoted when it happens via some sort of notification.

I'm not sure, but on some forums the negative voting can contribute to flame wars, hurt feelings, and poorer quality posts. Maybe that is why they are disabled here?

Well, over the last year or two, BBF has had flame wars, hurt feelings, and the quality of posts going down.

Maybe, but on other forums it does a good job of keeping really bad posts from being easily read. It drops them from view, or down the queue. I rather like how it's implemented on StackOverflow, and am not quite sure why we don't have something like that here.

On another forum (I'm not bothering to name it because I would bet money that no one who's posted in this thread is a regular member) they have a whole array of voting choices on the bottom of posts. The choices include "agree" and "disagree". It works really well in the part of the forum that is related to technique, although there is some wanking about "phantom disagreers", but not as much as could be expected.
Basically, the agree and disagree aren't up and down votes, so they remain displayed, and you can see if a post is controversial, widely agreed with, widely disagreed with, or a non-boat-rocker.
Other choices include "educational" and "interesting". I think that's even better than just having a vote up button, because there are many reasons people might want to vote up a post, and this is more specific.

I agree that this would be good to have. I'm not sure it is that important though if it were hard for bbo to implement. But yes it sounds good if it is a priority.
