In today’s column, Stewart suggests losing a club early to set up a discard on the boards 5th club. It looks to me like we start with two spade losers and a heart loser. If you lose a club at the start you can get rid of one of them later, but you’re still losing three tricks for down one. What am I missing?

Say west shifts to a heart - thus declarer loses 2 tricks at the beginning. He ruffs a club high, draws trump and gets 2 discards on the clubs (2 spade losers). Making 5♦

Thanks. You’re right of course. It feels a little magical, because west has four clubs so there’s only one extra in North. But now I get that one of the discards is on the Ace or King.
