Just curious how people like to open balanced hands. I've restricted to 4333 here (any four-card suit) because I know some people like preemptive openings with 4-4 in two suits.

I am not sure what my preferred methods are, I have many :)

Some thoughts:
- I like weak nt in 1st/2nd but constructive (say 14-16) in 3rd/4th
- I have toyed with 13-15 throughout and opening 4-card majors with 11-12 (and pass with balanced hands without a 4-card major) but the experience is a bit meh. 11-12 bal with a 4-card major probably isn't frequent enough to justify sacrificing the inference that 1M is a 5-card suit. Maybe in a strong club system it would be more adequate.
- If we play strong NT with coded minors, I think I prefer to open 1 with the weak hands and 1 with the strong ones
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

If too weak for 1N:

If 8-11 in 3rd/4th: 1
If 12-14 in 3rd/4th: 1
Else: Pass

If 18+:

If 20-22 in 1st/2nd: 1
Else: 1

1NT opening 15-17, range violation extremely rare

If 4333 and <15 HCP
... 1C if 12-14 (almost always open a 12 count)
... Pass if 11 or lower (almost never open such a 11 count)

If 18-20 HCP (various hand types, not just 4333), open 2D.
... Shows a bal/semi-bal 18-20 hand & does not include any weak options.
... This is my preferred system, though haven't used it for over 10 years now

If 21-22 & 4333, open 2NT

I voted lots because there isn't an option for "bid the four card suit" but then realised it's in the non-natural system discussion forum, so maybe not one I should answer, so deleted it.

14-16 NT, with the 11-13 balanced in 1D and 17+ balanced in 1C (optionally with 2N as 19-20 to split the balanced hands range in 1C).

It depends what the 4333 hand looks like
If playing a weak NT it is likely not very good
Maybe not even worth balancing - pass out

If its strong I would possibly consider a strong 1NT or an upgraded 2NT
Or my best minor
Or if playing 4 card majors maybe the 4-card major
I don't tend to pass with 18 points
