Too strong for 1, not the right shape (an extra heart) for 2NT +. So double it is. And partner will probably pass - disaster!

I'd bid 2N anyway

Playing the cue bids in The Overcall Structure 2 shows the touching suits and is unlimited, but time to decide on agreements.

I agree with 2N, but I think 4H over partner's 3C bid.

Better hope partner doesn't jump to 5, or the opponents don't jump to 4/5. 2NT has serious downsides.

Opponents can do that over a double and you are even worse off as you have failed to show either of your suits, and as you say, it is far from ideal if partner converts the double to penalties.

If you are not going to use a two suited convention with a hand like that just because it isn't perfect, you might as well take it off your convention card.

If partner jumps to 5 I'll bid 6 and hope I don't make 7.

If you double, how are you going to enjoy the auction 1-X-4/5-4/5

If partner will pass a takeout double with only five trumps, it is difficult to conduct *any* defensive auction.

So where do you want to play opposite partner's 4414 ? Either 1 is going off or you are most of the time. If you bid 1 partner will be 3415

5 is weak, not strong. Something like xx, xx, xxx, Qxxxxx. But you've convinced me that 2NT is better, despite the extra heart.

Partner doesn't have to have a second heart even though the finesse is likely to be on, and I wouldn't rule Axx, x, xxx, Qxxxxx out, 2N is much more likely to be weak than strong (and for us never in between), so just bid 5 and let them guess.

It seems to me this is Defensive Bidding 101. You bid 1 in tempo, and partner apologizes if it works out badly.

I'd bid 2NT then 3 if partner advances with 3. That must show a big 6-5.
