Known for our combination of guile, subtlety and ingenuity in the art of bidding, my partner and I reached the optimum contract of 6X.
I can tell immediately that everyone will be impressed by our careful control bidding and my improbable preempt.
So, after you stop crying/laughing at our bidding, how do the people that know what they're doing reach the right spot?

You have reached the top spot because (a) 6X scores better than 6. Posted Image

and (b) more importantly, 6 goes down on a spade lead (or as far as can see any lead apart from Ace of Diamonds and switch). After drawing trumps there is no way back to dummy without letting the opposition cash their spades

I'm surprised you couldn't find a better name for Partner who is the hero of the day :)
I don't much like 2 and even less the double by Innocent.
But all's well that ends well.

A more conventional sequence might be:
p
2-2
4-4
6-p

Where 4 imposes trumps and 4 shows control of hearts, denying control of diamonds.
Not sure I would risk this with opponents non-vulnerable though.

Thanks - I'll try harder next time! I always wondered why Gossett chose 'Student'?
'Partner' didn't think much of my 2 either, but I was the 'Dealer' - I felt obliged to say something.
