I know skrshawk recommends presenting only one hand in a thread, but these are related, so…
First question: in the hand below, can 6♦ by North be made on a spade lead?

Scoring: IMPs

I won't give a spoiler yet, but will comment that neither my partner or the defense had a chance to provide a practical answer to the question, as the auction went:
1♦ Dbl 1♥ 2♠
3♦ 3♠ 4♣
All pass :rolleyes:

Who goofed here? And by the way, do you agree with 1♥, or should I have redoubled?

My other stab at bidding a three-card suit was more successful:

With the opponents silent, the auction began
1♠ 2♦ 2♥
at which point my partner Blackwooded and put me in slam. Of course I was nervous and even considered "correcting" to 6NT, but was quite relieved when dummy came down. It's about 58%, and in the event, everything broke and we picked up 10 IMPs

Questions: Do you agree with 2♥?
Regardless of the answer, if one doesn't bid 2♥ here, what would you bid instead, and how would you subsequently reach the small slam?

6D can always be made double dummy on the first hand you gave on a spade lead:

Win spade
Heart finesse
Cash heart pitching spade
Heart ruff.
Diamond to jack. If the ace is won here and the CK is shifted to just run hearts through lefty. He must ruff, you can overruff, lead a trump to your ten and claim. So the ace must be ducked in which case:
Start running hearts. Lho must ruff, you can overruff and play a trump knocking out the diamond ace with the club ace still in your hand.

1a) Wow, I am really surprised a partner would pass a new suit at 4 level.
1b), agree with 1h, thought rdbl with ALL 10 hcp went out decades ago just because of this type of LHO bidding.
2) Cute, very cute. What a hand hog. I guess since you distrusted partner's bidding on hand one you were afraid of their declarer play on hand two so you grabbed hand.
BTW, seems very often bidding where your HCP points are rather than bidding random weak but long suits can be a big winner, as here.

passing 4♣ on first hand is wrong, it is game forcing at least.
bidding 2♦ having 5♥ is wrong, start with 2♥ if you wanna ever show that suit.
bidding 2♥ depends on your methods but IMO is wrong, a 2♠ rebid is in order.

Disagree strongly with 2H in your second example. Yu are showing an unbalanced hand whenin fact you are balanced. I would have opened a 14-16 NT or else opened 1S and rebid 2S.

Bidding suits you don't have is a losing proposition. Partner will not know how to evaluate his hand in support of your hand if you bid non existant suits.

On hand 1, 4C is forcing. HOwever, whether it's the best bid or not remains to be seen. 1H is fine as a 1st bid.

Hand 2, 2H is wrong. This 100% guarantees 4 hearts under any system I know.
