If you do not have a better agreement with your partner, bid 3NT.
You should be able to stop twice, stop all other suits and partner is very likely to hold 5 HCP with a length other than .

X then 3N (suggesting spade tolerance)

Double. Any 18+ hand is good enough to double regardless of shape. This hand is too strong for a direct 2NT overcall (15-18). If you have Lebensohl on your cc you will even get the chance to learn if partner has a constructive hand or not.

But Lebensohl is not the topic here. Another time.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

another vote for double
but also, think about the various rebids you might want to make other than 3NT should partner show some life over there. For example, if partner responds at the 3-level, have you discussed what 3NT and what 4NT by you would mean then?

I would X, then 3NT, just as everybody else, but I think the interesting question is: What is the difference between X, then 3NT and a direct 3NT? I would expect X then 3NT to be based on hcp, and a direct 3NT on tricks (running minor).

X then 3N shows spade tolerance.

Was an individual BIL tourney so no agreements, lebensohl not on.

I bid 3NT at the table (after thinking so long they started asking if I was there :-)) I thought I had two options: 3NT or X followed by 3NT. Since p is a passed hand the risk of missing a slam is lesser and I dont see any way to stop under 3NT anyway.
- If p has a wery weak hand with 6 spades, not able to open 2S she will bid 4S.
- If p has enough to bid bid 3S after X she will bid over 3NT.
- If p bids 2S over X I still have to bid 3NT, right ?
- P will not make a penalty pass with my H holding.
- If p was not passed I would X.

Still a clear majority for X. Why am I thinking wrong ?

- Partner should not pull over a direct 3NT even with 6 spades. My 3NT could be

A
Kx
AKQxxxx
Jxx

- Even less so if she is balanced or semi-balanced.

- 2NT is enough after my double and her 2 response. Shows 19-21 in my book.

Over 3mi I shall have to gamble on 3NT. Would be easier if 3/ had been Lebensohl. The worst scenario is a 2NT response (Lebensohl). I will now break the transfer (3) and punt 3NT. No guarantee of success though.

You don't always have a safety net when opps pre-empt. That is what pre-empts are for: Make it more difficult for the opponents if it's their hand.

I don't think your thinking is "wrong".

It is just that many pairs want to differentiate between two sorts of 3NT hand

1. Balanced hand with a lot of HCP (X then 3NT)
2. Running suit and stops outside (Direct 3NT)
