This is one of a number of hands where the best line is obvious if you have less high cards, and the extras merely seduce you into doing the wrong thing, if the missing spades were KQJ, everybody would play like this.

Everybody? I've seen players - yes, admittedly very bad - not touch trumps and try to get rid of their losers on high cards outside the trump suit. I think it's fair to give credit where credit's due that a young teenager who is learning bridge found the right play. Well done your niece!

This one sounds quite similar to “Sylvia” stories published in Bridge World many years ago.Welcome to the forum.
