I voted 100% east but would change that to 100% west in a heartbeat if they had ever or especially recently bid on junk red in front of this partner.

100% East - its just far too good a hand to merely invite vul at imp imo.

I'm not exactly enchanted with the Landy on 4-4 when vulnerable, but that just makes more of the blame go to East - he has a game bid opposite this 4-4 (assuming he can trust partner to not overcall on some mediocre 44(32)), let alone the "proper" likely 4-5.

IMO, after (1N) 2 (Pass) ??
  • Pass = NAT, Misfit. Long s.
  • 2 = ART. 2-3 s and 3s: You choose.
  • 2/2 = NAT. Preference.
  • 2N = REL. Asking for more info.
  • 3/ = PRE.

After (1N) 2 (Pass) 2N (Pass) ??, try to put the 1N opener on lead.
  • 3 = ART. MIN.
  • 3 = ART. MIN. Longer .
  • 3 = ART. MAX.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. Longer .

You can use this style of responses, consistently, in other contexts e.g.

After (1N) 2 [= 6+M] (Pass) 2N (Pass) ??,
  • 3 = ART. MIN. s.
  • 3 = ART. MIN. s.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. s.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. s.

After 2 [= 6+M] (Pass) 2N (Pass) ??,
  • 3 = ART. MIN. s.
  • 3 = ART. MIN. s.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. s.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. s.

After (1N) 2 [= 5+ 4+m] (Pass) 2N (Pass) ??,
  • 3 = NAT MIN. s.
  • 3 = NAT MIN. s.
  • 3 = NAT MAX. s.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. s.

After (1) 2 (Pass) 2N (Pass) ??
  • 3 = NAT MIN. s and s.
  • 3 = NAT MIN. s and s.
  • 3 = NAT MAX. s and s.
  • 3 = ART. MAX. s and s.

Clearly the pair shows no discipline when overcalling Landy. Who gets the blame depends on whether West would Landy without some of those high cards. (For example, would the pair bid Landy on xxxx, KQxx, Qxx, xx?) If so, I blame both for having such a style (or perhaps I blame whichever partner forces this style upon the partnership; sometimes when the partners are significant others, it's hard for one of the partners to demand sanity), otherwise I blame East.

It's 100% East.

First, any time you hold a big fit with partner in one of two suits you know is held AND shortness in the other, you know the hands are taking a lot of tricks. So it pays to bid these hands aggressively.

But further the auction has told East more. RHO has doubled for a leading indicating some sort of holding in that suit. LHO should have at least a doubleton. If both LHO and partner can ruff , then partner will be in position to over ruff LHO which is a positive. Additionally, if RHO holds some pieces, then partner is more likely to hold red suit values and those values are likely to be well placed behind opener.

With red pockets at IMPs, you want to bid games aggressively as any game that has 35%+ chance of making will yield break even or positive IMPs in the long run.

So, I'd bid 4 in a flash with this hand. This is a good Fred Will principle ("I don't do anything in the bidding or play that I can be criticized for in the post mortem.") hand. Here, which would you really want to defend in the post mortem -- bidding a vulnerable game aggressively that didn't make or trying to explain why you didn't bid one that did. Easy decision -- bid the game.

Finally, I also think West should carry on to 4 also in the actual auction. Much of the same logic outlined in the previous 3 paragraphs applies to West. Partner has invited with 3 and West's hand has "improved", so bid the game.

I voted 75 % East, although it's hard to answer with confidence without knowing more about EW's style.

With East you need to bid 4S in my opinion (or some kind of relay but i would like to give the opp as little as possible information.) With my style of landy 4S will sometimes be to high, but it's teams.

Maybe the lead directing double by N is also a signal for short clubs by W?
