surely GIB can count on me to contribute at least one trick
"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

Well, clearly for GIB the bid is forcing (as it should be). Description says 12+ points. Perhaps it just thinks it is too good for 4 spades.

Good issue.
As stephen Tu said earlier :

I think GIB is just kind of rigid in that it doesn't like to open 1nt with semi-balanced shapes (more than one doubleton, 5422s, 6322s). So 2335 is OK for 1nt but 4252 isn't.
His opinion is correct, 3♠ only says " 5+♠, 12+TPs ", never say " forcing ".
Do you know the explanation on 4♠ ?
Now I can tell you the exact answer :
4♠ says "15+hcp,strong rebiddable ♠,16TPs".
If directly bidding 4♠, it never conform to the definition of 4♠. So no way, only bid 3♠.

12 TP opposite a 1 level overcall with both opponents bidding (one showing a positional guard over partner's suit) and no confirmed fit (5 card suit sufficient) is not enough to GF anyway. So perhaps an upper limit of whatever should be non-forcing is implicit?

Good research. So, the definition of 4♠ should be changed. This hand is a 4♠ bid.

I had a hand years ago when a gib had 10 solid and decided to allow me to play 2S. At least the side with 9 solid here, and the related 8 solid thread played the hand!

Time of your hand is 2011-July, so we can know your Gib should be 18 version. See GIB Release Notes - updated with each new version.
How about it now?
1- A standard sequence :
Result :5♦W+1
2- A your non-standard sequence :
Result : 2♠NX+1

So, Dude was pointing out at Version 18 West was silly enough to let NS play 2S; Current Version West is worse.

Thanks Lycier, wow double is a lot worse than passing 2S. For what it's worth, when I played that board way back then, it was in a Bridge Bingo tourney and I needed a 2S contract to complete my line, hence the rather skewed double.
