Shame on the judge who threw out his stolen documents case.
But mostly shame on us for letting all this happen.

Investigation and gathering of evidence precedes going to court. This Garland meme has gone on too long and it is unjust criticism. The SCOTUS and Judge Cannon are to blame not Garland.

Garland bent over backwards for Convicted Felon Trump to avoid being accused of political prosecutions. Garland's inactions got exactly the results that bending over for Convicted Felon Trump always gets.
Maybe if Garland didn't sit on his thumbs, Cannon would not have been selected as the judge in the stolen documents case. And the insurrection cases would have been completed and Convicted Felon Trump convicted once again on multiple felony cases, and this time, sent to prison. And yes, the Supreme Court interfered in those cases and delayed trials. If Garland had been an aggressive AG, there would have been plenty of time for Trump to be tried in those other cases.

You’re not being helpful. I advise reading Marcy Wheeler’s reporting on this entire episode for a fact based discussion of Garland’s response.

Exactly correct, Johnu! The Garland defenders here are right that Cannon and SCOTUS are (largely) to blame. Cannon and SCOTUS are disgusting...BUT if Garland had DONE HIS JOB PROPERLY, they might have been unable to let the convicted felon off. Stop trying to defend ineptitude, WasWinM.

Time was of the essence in getting Trump to trial since everybody, and especially the DOJ knew that they would have to curtail prosecutions in the final stretches of the 2024 political campaign since after Trump's escape from the impeachment trial it was clear he would run for office again.
Quote
It took a year and a half to seize Clark's phone after the Jan 6 insurrection. It was more than 2 1/2 years until Convicted Felon Trump was indicted.
And that was just the election interference case.
There was absolutely no reason for delays in the open and shut case of the stolen documents and obstruction of justice case. Mar-a-Lago wasn't searched until August 22, 2022, another year and a half after Trump stole those documents. Trump wasn't indicted until June 8, 2023 in the stolen documents case, 2 1/2 years after he left office.
If that sounds like Garland was investigating at full speed ahead, then we have different definitions of timely investigations.

Again, I suggest the entirety of Marcy Wheeler’s reporting on this episode. She is not prone to emotional conclusions.
No doubt we wanted Trump in prison; Garland wasn’t the problem.( Emptywheel is her handle on Bkuesky and emptywheel.net for her blog)

Trump claims he got 250,000 people at his parade. Of course it's a lie, like when he said the audience at his first inauguration was the biggest ever -- anyone could see with their own eyes that the Mall was not packed. But his supporters consistently believe whatever he spews.

I normally like to listen to Marcy Wheeler when she is on TV as a guest. But her article is a whitewash of Garland's foot dragging and slow rolling of Trump investigations. The impression of Garland is that he wanted to appear super fair and nonpartisan to show that he would have been a fair and impartial supreme court justice. Garland maybe succeeded in that goal, however, he was the US Attorney General, not a supreme court justice, and his focus and responsibility should have been on putting the worst criminals in the US into prison.
Also, AFAIK, Wheeler doesn't address the delays in the stolen documents/obstruction of justice case against Convicted Felon Trump which was a slam dunk case if it got to trial.

Honestly, seems like even more whitewashing to me. At best, it shows that Garland was totally incompetent instead of having done doing nothing for months. As I noted, time was of the essence to get Trump indicted and get trials completed before the 2024 elections forced the DOJ to freeze actions against Trump, assuming DOJ was going to follow precedent. Personally, I would have continued ongoing investigations and trials against Trump during the presidential campaign.
