That is true. But if you have the agreement:
4♣ Always (regardless of whether they have opened/shown ♣ or ♦) other minor + a major
4♦ Always (regardless of whether they have opened/shown ♣ or ♦) both majors
then you can use 4♦ over 4♣ to ask for the major.
Obviously, it can then get ugly if you (or partner) forgets...

I wouldn't say 2S was 'wrong'. I just like 3C more.

Or if they are inconsiderate enough to raise diamonds to 4 or 5. I think it might even be a free psych.

Yes, experts do form casual partnerships. And yes, many experts do like to follow the KISS principle and keep it simple. Many even do that in their regular partnerships. But refraining from using cuebids is not KIS, it is simply S.

Simple over-calls with such freak hands can go without any raise. After the double if partner replies the short suit (♥in this case so bid 3♣, which will show 2 suited hand, other suit being ♠.

Why did N have an obvious 3 NT over 3♣? Is it because he can easily see that South will not pass and rescue him by bidding 4♠? What if god forbid, south had only 3 spades? Did 3♣ ask ♦ stopper? I am not saying N should pass. I think N has hell of a difficult hand to make a decision and whatever he chooses will be far away from being clear.
