I would pass at MP's, but don't like it with single C and only HK as potential trick.

Not a great hand to leave a penaltyish x in. Sure sometimes p has
them by the throat but they will need to take pretty much all of the
tricks by themselves. Much safer is 3h which shows a distinct distaste
about defending 3c yet shows a non hopeless hand concerning game. Save
pass for when you have an ace or something useful (JX in clubs maybe)
3h may win by being the only makeable contract (p will not pass w/o 4
since they know we will take be taking club ruffs with the long suit
vs doing so with the short suit in a spade contract), guiding us to
the correct strain at game level and even getting us to game we might
otherwise miss.

I'm not sure I understand the distinction between 'penalty' and 'penaltyish'. What would he do if he had them dead to rights, with a true penalty double?
However, assuming partner knows what he is doing, our hand is not going to be a surprise for him. In particular, we lack a 4th spade and a club void, either of which would make me pull the double. Pulling a penalty double when holding exactly the hand-type he expects us to have, when he doubled them, is partnership killing.
If they make, then he didn't have his double. I am not playing superman.

What Mike is asking, I assume, whether it is penalty or is he asking our opinion and just telling us he has some defensive values in clubs. At team trials you would expect a pair to have discussed this position. I would pass.Pd could bid a red suit if he wanted to make game try.

Let me put it in another way: partner is expected to leave the double in unless the hand is very offensive.
