In my experience, most of those fumbles involve an immediate "I mean HIGH diamond". But I think I would have done as you even without that correction.

We had something just like this at the club, last week. Declarer had a diamond suit like AKJ9x in dummy opposite a stiff Q. She cashed the Q, crossed to dummy in another suit, and called for a "diamond"... (No doubt we should have called the TD, but this is never a popular move at the club! I simply persuaded partner that declarer's intention was clear and that he wasn't going to win this trick with 10.)

Actually, I did something almost exactly like this at club a few weeks ago. You know what? I lost the trick, and would never consider for an instant trying to get it back, or accepting it back if the opponents offered. The way I learned to play games, mistakes count.

I think that's a reasonable point of view, too. And to be fair, I think the little old lady who made the careless call would have accepted losing the trick (and indeed the rest of the suit, since there weren't any entries left) with reasonable grace if we had stood our ground, as it were, and she wouldn't have needed or indeed wanted the director called to enforce this. However, I also think it would have spoilt her evening, while it wouldn't have improved my enjoyment of my evening.

I also think, actually, that her intention WAS more or less incontrovertible - I'm sure it was simply a careless designation, and that she hadn't either failed to notice the 10 was missing or assumed it had already gone. So even if she would have accepted the loss of the trick, I don't think it would have been the correct ruling.

I am adding "more or less incontrovertible" to my list of things to ponder.

The same list as "somewhat pregnant" and "more unique"?
