This will be my first christmas as a married man, my wife had been insisting that with all the economic problems we have we should avoid making any presents, wich I can't agree more, not because of the financial crisis, but because I hate shopping.

But yesterday she appeared with a gift "from santa" (or the spannish equivalent) for me, and makes it obvious that I should buy something for her. Wich means going shoppin on december 23rd, Sunday. Can there be a worse day for this?, but more important: should I had foreseen this coming?

Yes.

But Merry Christmas to you anyway!

It is very important that men understand that when a woman says no she means no. Except when she says she doesn't want anything for her birthday or for Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Especially if she says its because we can't afford it.

But I think even asking the internet for advice on understanding the woman (or other significant other) in your life is likely to get the OP into more trouble.

Yes, you have to buy her something. And yes, you should have seen it coming and be prepared.

How did she make it obvious?

Did you have the discussion 'we said we wouldn't buy anything'? If so what was her response?

Buy her flowers :)

a) married < 6 months - Not necessarily

b) married 6-24 months - You should not be surprised at least

c) married > 2 years - You should, just in this second in which she said her statement about the gifts

I mentioned OP's predicament to 4 women today. The consensus is that "no presents" means "not a lot of presents or no expensive presents". They suggested lingerie, a silk or wool scarf, a cute hat, chocolates or perfume.

Every year there's usually a couple of Xmas episodes of TV shows (usually sitcoms) where the couple agree not to buy presents. What happened to you always happens to them. Who says TV isn't an educational medium?

1. You have a very understanding wife - she was aware that she should indicate her understanding of the deal a couple of days before. And she knew subtle hints would not be enough. You should be grateful!

2. I assume you realize this lesson doesn't only apply to Christmas. If she "really doesn't want anything" for your anniversary, she still won't mind large, beautiful bouquet of flowers, and you coming up with an enjoyable plan for the day.
