But yesterday she appeared with a gift "from santa" (or the spannish equivalent) for me, and makes it obvious that I should buy something for her. Wich means going shoppin on december 23rd, Sunday. Can there be a worse day for this?, but more important: should I had foreseen this coming?

It is very important that men understand that when a woman says no she means no. Except when she says she doesn't want anything for her birthday or for Christmas.
Merry Christmas.

Especially if she says its because we can't afford it.
But I think even asking the internet for advice on understanding the woman (or other significant other) in your life is likely to get the OP into more trouble.

a) married < 6 months - Not necessarily
b) married 6-24 months - You should not be surprised at least
c) married > 2 years - You should, just in this second in which she said her statement about the gifts

Yes, it is important to get the woman's view on these things.

2. I assume you realize this lesson doesn't only apply to Christmas. If she "really doesn't want anything" for your anniversary, she still won't mind large, beautiful bouquet of flowers, and you coming up with an enjoyable plan for the day.
