I transfer, and it matters a lot.

Yep, transfer.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Transfer. With a suit like KQTxx, I can see how NT might take the same number, but it seems very anti-field.

I transfer because the field is transferring, and because of a Larry Cohen study of a million deals --> when a 1NT overcall is the final contract, it averages 45% at MPs. I bet this is probably because most people overcall 1NT on 1.5 stoppers, maybe not even having that half a stopper. Regardless, passing 1NT is a losing proposition.

I transfer because I expect hearts to take more tricks than notrump most of the time. Not because of the field, not because of a study that may not reflect the current deal at all. There are so many ways this could happen.
Partner doesn't have the ace of hearts, and they can hold it up to cut off my dummy.
Partner has Ax of hearts and they don't run.
Partner has just one spade stopper, so the opponents will set up lots of tricks when they get in later (say he needs a trick from KQx of a minor or something).
Partner has a doubleton in a minor and we get a ruff.
Partner has no stopper in one of the minors so we need to play in a suit.
Opener is about to rebid 2♠ and partner can compete to 3♥, or if he doesn't he will at least lead a heart now if nothing else is obvious.
Passing has one way to win, which is notrump takes the same (or more?) tricks than hearts. I'll pay off.

Thanks very much. I played in 1nt and did a double take when dummy came down.
My (pickup) partner was more interested in why I overcalled nt with only 1 ♠ stopper than
why I thought a transfer was a good idea. (A982,AJ9,QJ2,A72)
