What's the best defense against a dead NT? E.g. 1m-1M, 1N P P
I know that standard is that dbl requests the lead of dummy's suit. Can this fit in with the best defense or is it better to give up that double?

So far I've found
dbl-asks lead of RHO's suit
2C-clubs and a higher
2D-diamonds and a higher
2H-majors
Anything better than that? Can one of the suits be RHO's major?

Asking for dummy's suit seems of very limited use against 1NT.
I can't imagine the frequency for hands needing that lead and having enough general strength to be semi-confident of a set and not having bid on the previous round being that high. Maybe if you don't play a natural 1NT overcall in the sandwich position it is a bit higher.

Yes, I've felt that way, too. I don't think I've ever made a lead-directing double against 1N (have against 3N) but I know it's standard treatment. Off the cuff, I remember Mike Lawrence recommending it, so maybe I just need to look for opportunities to use it.
OTOH, dbl might be useful in fit-finding. It could show a single-suit or tell partner which of my two-suiters is longest or it could show possession of a 3-suited hand. Etc.
