Scoring: IMP

Dealer opens 1♦. Partner overcalls 1N. South passes. I invite game with 3♠.

What I know: Partner is 4432. He may or may not have a stopper in diamonds. He has at least 2 spades.

Was my invite mistaken as I should count 1+1 pts for the shortages in hearts and diamonds and put us in game?

I am looking for some kind of guidelines for this spot.

That direct 3S bid has removed any advantage for the lead coming into Opener.
What is wrong with a simple transfer and then a 3S invite ( although this 8 loser hand may not be worth it ) ?

Partner shouldn't overcall 1NT without a stopper in diamonds. Although he might chose to bid 1NT with something like
Kx-AJxx-xxx-AKQx
you should assume he has a diamond stopper.
Also, he is not necessarily 4432. He would also bid 1NT with
Kx-AQx-AQx-Jxxxx
and probably even with a much better 5-card clubs, say
xx-Qxx-AQx-AKJxx
I agree he has in principle at least two spades, although some might bid 1NT with
K-AJxx-AQx-Qxxxx
you should indeed assume he has at least two spades.

I would just invite opposite a 1NT opening but opposite a 1NT overcall I would bid game. The fact that your LHO opened 1♦ makes the play a little easier because you know where most of the oppositions points are and you know that partner's honors, especially his diamond honors, are likely to be well-placed. So you can bid a little more aggressively opposite a 1NT overcall than opposite a 1NT opening.

I would make the same bid I would make if my LHO had passed originally (4H, texas).

Opposite a 1NT overcall, which most people play has a slightly wider/higher range, I would make sure we get to game on this hand.

Hi,

#1 You dont need to worry about the diamond stopper.
#2 A 3S bid is not an invite, it forces to game
#3 Inviting is ok, most play system on, i.e. would transfer
to spade, followed by a 3S bid, for me a 1NT opening
and a 1NT overcall have similar strength.

The point is that partner's strength is over opener strength so even if a hand is invite opposite opening it may be worth forcing to game opposite overcall.

I would just add that it is counterproductive to agree on 4432 shape, if this was your agreement. I assume so because there is no other way you could "know" that partner has that shape.

They give a nice bonus to make game at IMPs so I am GFing here and prefer to do so via transfer.

For me, a 1NT overcall is not a random scattered 15- but at least a decently positioned 15+.
