Scoring: MP

North opens 1, south responds 1. If EW enter the bidding at this point, north passes. If they do not, north rebids 2 which ends their bidding

A lot of complaints on this one that it wasn't even a problem, and why was it included? Yet not a single pair reached the optimal contracts of 2x.

Maybe this easiest problem turned into the hardest problem, or maybe for some reason it wasn't fair. Not sure which.

2CxN-=10, 1Sw=7, 2Sew=6, 2CN-=1

This is a rather silly problem.

In order to get the top spot, E/W have to pass a hand that every normal person will overcall (otherwise N/S will not even bid 2). Note that if N/S bid 1NT or 2 there is a fair chance they will even make, but of course they "wouldn't bid that."

This is almost like giving a hand where dealer has a 15-count, and if he passes in first chair (and it doesn't show values) his opponents will bid something ridiculous which he can double for a top board, but if he bids anything opponents will pass throughout the auction and he has no chance at the top spot. Is it any surprise that people wouldn't "get it right"?

I think this hand would've been more interesting if 2 had been bid over 1 also. This gives E/W an opportunity to get to the "top spot" if they find a penalty double instead of raising. It also might convince a few people to try 2NT or push to the three-level to make a limit raise (depending on their methods).

Is it really expected that 2 is down often enough for 1 to be better?

Personally, I feel that asking anybody to reach the "optimal" contract of 2 doubled is ridiculous. It may be optimal, but it is in no way plausible.
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?
