The Dutch squad is set:

* Brink - Drijver
* Muller - de Wijs
* Jansma - Paulissen

Brink is predicting the following medals: 1. Poland 2. Italy 3. Netherlands, but is hoping for more. Source: www.imp-bridge.nl

If we have (B+Z)x3=surely :) ...but we haven't so I think, to fight the BB spot back will be primarily and realistic goal for the team, maybe there will be chance for bronze medal, who knows. The first 8 teams in Europe got closer and closer in last couple of years, I expect a very tough competition, same like at the last Europeans.

side question...

do many...most european countries, for this event, pick the players....rather than open, I mean really open, team trails?................

I mean assume I am a citizen of our country and a dues paying member of our bridge country......can I get a team and play in our open trials..... as a dues paying member???

it depends,

every federation has other rules how to pick their team,

some run open trials open for everybody, some have some trials to creat a pool of candidates and pick 3 of them, some create a pool of players and play trials to get the 3 best and some just pick 3 pairs and send them...

Often this way will be change in a federation from way A to B when the team selected via A was not successfull.

When Italy this year will not gain a BB spot, lots of italians will ask "did Mrs. Lavazza really pick the best" and maybe we will see some Italian trials again.

Then again Poland did not play that well in the last Championships. Their best pair, for several reasons, did not participate in the trials and they have started just selecting the team this time.

Thanks for sharing it. This part may best explain ( for outsiders) what the current situation in italian bridge is.

interesting statement by Marchiori (Angelini's friend and Giorgio Belladonna's son il law) about Italian Team...

"Ms. Lavazza in addition to being the TO of the national team, is still the leader of her own team, and having become TO of the national, she removes one of the base pairs of the Angelini team. Two plus two make four?"
