throwing up an airball, here.
Pure theory, am interested in opinions.
the theory I am thinking about is an opening lead situation, where a trump lead, might be---but is not clearly right.
"When in doubt, don't lead trump if you cannot lead them again." i.e., axx, ax, xxx, or any sequence, but not kxx, etc.
I understand there are other factors, but looking for a general rule, here.
any takers?

The main rule is "listen to the auction". When the auction calls for a trump lead, that lead is usually right, regardless of your holding. Example:
1♠ 1NT
2♥ pass
Holding something like
KJ9x
Axx
Qxx
Qxx
the trump lead should be right, given you have good chances of scoring some spade tricks after trumps are pulled. Same if you had, say, Kxx or Qxx of hearts.

"The lower the level of the doubled partial, the faster you lead a thrumph."
