3nt contract.

Kx of h in dummy
declarer holds 2-4hearts.

Assume you hold J982 of H

Pard leads low h....you win J and you decide returning h is best. Which one do you return?

My concern is if the 9 is correct how does partner know if you hold 3 or 4h?

Your concern is exactly the reason the 2 is correct, not the 9.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

If you decide to play the 9 based on fear of blocking the suit, you can have 2-4 when you play the 9.

Guess it depends on auction and rest of the hand, if you think partner has a side entry you'll be less likely to play the 9.

Declarer has at least three hearts:
If he had Ax or Qx he would take your J, if he had Tx or lower he presumably would have played the K from the dummy at trick 1. There is therefore no need to worry about blocking the suit and you can lead back the correct count card of the deuce.

My guess is that partner has led from four to the queen. Declarer is holding up once with a double stop, sometimes a correct play.
