1♠ is infinitely better than 2♥.
A good general rule is that a direct cue-bid after partner opens or overcalls should show primary support for partner's suit.

1♠ natural and forcing for the first round. Now I might be tempted by 4♣ if my partner thought it was gerber, on the way to 4♠

1S after 1H and see what takes place we could easily have a slam. Cue bids as Wayne mentions generally indicate a fit with partner.

Simple advice, but if you try to follow this
one, lots of things will get simpler.
As it is, the cue in this sitiuation promises fit
for openers suit, at least this is one of the
standard meanings, the second meaning is,
that it asks for a stopper, and does this help
to describe your hand?
No, you have 8 spades, start bidding them.
The way the auction developed, you got lucky,
bid you suit, 4S I guess.
