The reason is that you may not have enough bidding space to show both of your suits if opps intervene or if p makes a 2 response. I don't think there is concensus about 2 with a 2-suiter being a bad idea. After all, if you really have a monster hand like
AKQxx
Axx
AKQxx

there is little alternative.

Ben (Inquiry) from this forum has some nice conventions for opening strong 2-suiters. If you don't want to play them, you could play that 2 with a 2-suiter is allowed but you try to avoid it, i.e. if the risk of missing game when you open one of a suit is limited you do that instead.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Just want to add one thing:

Be on the look out for possible rebid problems, if there is
none, go ahead and bid 2C, ... in my opinion it is ok, to
assume no interruption by the oponents and that partner
always bids 2D over 2C, but of course this are points to
consider as well.

For example, if you have a 2-suiter with spades, and
spades is at least as long as your 2nd suit, ideally this
would be hearts, you wontt face any rebid problems.

If on the other side, you happen to hold a 2-suiter,
with the higher ranking suit is the shorter one,
and is a minor on top off it, an extreme example being
a hand with 6 clubs and 5 diamonds, than you will face
serious rebid problems, in this case you should most likely
open 1C, and more or less independ from strenght

With kind regards
