I'd start with a GF. There are a variety of strains where this could belong and starting with 2 lets us look for the correct strain more easily. 4, 4, and 3NT all look like possibilities right now.

If it goes 1 1 2, now you really have no way to tell if 3NT or 4 will be better and basically just have to take a shot at it.

Its close but I'll go the low road with 1.

-Stiff A is a problematic holding.

-Our club suit sucks.

Forcing this to game feels like an overbid to me.

2. It may be a slight overbid, but at least it has the benefit of being a more natural auction. If you bid 1 , you won't be able to introduce the clubs without creating a game force anyway, and you lose the relative suit lengths. Starting 2 lets you pattern out your hand, usually with a 2 bid next, or 3N if partner raises clubs (I would usually play that raising clubs denies a four card spade suit).

Let's be honest: You probably won't be happy if the auction dies below game level anyway, so you might as well force now and get the benefits of your actions.

2C. Certainly not embarrassed about my hand, it looks pretty average for a 12count to GF the auction. If I already am treating this hand as a GF I would not bid 1S because the auction can get quite complicated after that and I don't want to lie about my shape too. Nothing's stopping us from finding a spade fit after 2C too.

1.

If partner bids 2, 2NT.

After 2D over my 2C, I bid 2NT, you have
to show the spade stopper.

It really depends on your opening bid style, but I think if you are not opening an abnormal amount of 11 counts GFing with this is fine. Red at imps you should aim to reach thin 12 opposite 12/13 games rather than stay out of them.

Here's the full hand, from a team match I was kibitzing. The other table played 4 after a 1 response.
I was interested if people always bypass a 4M with a game forcing hand, what if the auction had gone 1 (P) 2 (4)

North should pattern out with 3...

This is a style question.

Being a light opener, this is an automatic 1 for me. If you're opening style is semi-solid it's very close between 1 and 2, and playing a sound opening style there's no question this is a 2 GF response.
Kind regards,
Harald

Agree that N should pattern with 3S. The decision to bid 1S or 2C has nothing to do with the result IMO.

I would always force this hand to game vulnerable at IMPs. I open pretty much all 5332 11 counts, and still I don't think this is a close decision.

Given that the hand is a game force, bidding 2 instead of 1 is not 'bypassing a 4M', it is bidding out your shape.

And, as others have said, North has a completely routine 3 bid after 2NT. One huge benefit of having a forcing 2NT here is being able to learn more about North's hand. North's 3NT is a bad bid.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

3 pattern out show 3 not 4, how does it help?

You don't need to show 3 spades in this auction. To show a 5440 is more important here.
