(1) I'd say this is one of the disadvantages of a strong club, that one accepts in exchange for the other benefits.

Always 1 unless are worth rebidding. I'm more used to a Polish style where this is a very common treatment.

After 1- 1 even with

x
Qxx
AQxx
AQxxx

I dislike rebidding 2 and rather go 1 then 2. And if you say "rebid 1NT" change the q into something else so 1NT is not an option.

I have a hard time rebidding 1Nt with a stiff and in a natural setup i have a hard time rebidding 2C with 5. So i open 1D with 45 fairly often. I rarely bid 1S with 3.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

Another pattern that makes it beneficial to open 1 is a 0=4=4=5, although if my hearts are great I'll open 1.

Yes..I open 1 here unless strong enuf to reverse (of course) or unless my 5 card is strong or my poorish. I have no qualm about rebidding a good 5 card suit as I feel it is telling the smaller lie.

I don't care at all for strict Walsh style vs 1 so I won't miss too many good fits after 1

Usually 1, unless with a passed partner and a huge difference in suit quality (extreme example: AKQJ 65432).

Interesting to see that almost nobody open 1 these days. Hardy writes that it is "very important" to open 1 with 2245. Have things changed?

If partner is strong and you have an uncontested auction, you will be able to describe your hand more accurately by opening 1 I suppose (of course it depends on your follow-ups but allocating more hands to 1 than to 1 cannot be optimal for uncontested auctions).

Other than that I don't feel strongly about it. I usually open 1 but if p wants me to open 1 it's ok too.

Playing our home-grown version of Boring Club, we must open 1. We can rebid 1NT without suggesting a balanced hand since 1 more or less denied a balanced hand, so even with 0445 I rebid 1NT. I think we would need to rethink the check-back structure to cater for such bizarre 1NT rebids if we were do develop it into a serious bidding system. Or maybe the whole concept is wrong: I am not very happy with a 1NT opening showing 5+ clubs I must say although it keeps the rest of the bidding system quite clean.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Yes. For many people that's become a routine 1NT opener or rebid.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
