Trump asking bids are common (5 of a major or 5NT jump). However there are also asking bids for suits that are not trumps, but how do you agree to them? how do you play them? do they go along well with cue-bids and exclusion key-card? How do you know which is which?

Many non-standard systems use asking bids after a trump fit has been established. There are very well established rules within those systems for when a new suit bid is an asking bid.
Kantar uses asking bids in side suits after the initial response to RKCB.

Hi,
one possibility is to Roman Keycard Control Ask,
a bid which is a cue bid in standard, is now a control
ask, if partner does not have a control, he bids the next
step else shows his numbers of key cards.
If partner denies a cue, you can ask about another suit.
If partner already showed a control, further bids of the
suit, ask for specific holdings in the suit.
See Ron Klinger "Power Acol".
In my opinion this approach works as well as the standard
cue bidding approach.
But I did not play it for a very long time, and the opponents
were also not really strong, so ...

Romex uses asking bids in some auctions, cue bids in others. Check out Bid to Win, Play for Pleasure.

That's a big question, by which I mean that a big answer is possible. I personally use a lot of different types of asking bids, depending upon the sequence, and they do have a place in a cuebidding/RKCB/Exclusion slam structure.
