6H or double.

I'm feeling optimistic, 6H.

X, but as was stated it is more a question
how do you feel, 6H is the alternative.

It would be great, if one could bid 5D as some
kind of constructive raise to 5H, but another day
you will be happy to bid 5D naturally.

I believe playing MP, the constructive raise makes
more sense, but this is a highly specifc partnership
agreement.

With kind regards
Marlowe

dbl. Opps may start with a club ruff against 6. I'd rather bid 6N than 6.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

I'm optimistic, so I'll bid 6NT. The alternative is double.
Kind regards,

Speak of the Devil...

Last night I held x Ax x KQ109xxxxx. I jumped to 5 over an opening 2, was greeted by 6 to my left, P-6. I couldn't take the heat, I bid 7. Wrong again.

So there's something to be said for the cue bid. Better to double 7 than 5.

Yes, but you had decent defence against 6H (the ace of trumps for 1).

I bid 6C.

If I am going to bid 6H anyway (and if you held a gun to my head and said what is the most likely final contract, it would be 6H) I might as well bid 6C.

I have 5 likely cover cards for partner's 5-7 losers (typical for a one-bid) - The K and Q of hearts, the A and K of diamonds and the CA. The chance that partner does not have 2 or more diamonds is extremely small. The chance that partner does not have a club is much higher, but the CA may be a useful card in any event.

If partner has a reasonable opening bid like:

Axx
AJxxxx
QJx
x

we are very likely cold for 7H barring a club ruff. Or he could have

Axx
AJxxxx
QJxx
---

Now we are cold for 7H on virtually any rational lie of the cards.

Having said that, we may not get to 7H even if I bid 6C. But I might as well try.
